Solyaris (1972)

IMDB: Solyaris (1972)

Plot Summary: The Solaris mission has established a base on a planet that appears to host some kind of intelligence..
======================================================

Film auteurs will tell you that this is *the* Lem film -- the epic sci-film wrapper surrounding an isolationist, angst filled emotional film of loniness and love.

After watching both this and the remake within a week, I have to vie for the latter, which I felt put just the right punch in the story.

Returner (2002)

IMDB: Returner (2002)

Plot Outline: A young woman from the future forces a local gunman to help her stop an impending alien invasion which will wipe out the human race.
=======================================

Bits and pieces of cool sci-fi, future cop/bad guy footage -- some memorable moments, but mostly forgetable.

Peeping Tom (1960)

IMDB: Peeping Tom (1960)

Plot Outline: A young man murders women, using a movie camera to film their dying expressions of terror.
=============================================

This voyuer classic was attacked for its horrific subject matter of the time, but while appearing quite mild with today's sensibilities, it still carries the bizarre creepiness that caused it's initial outcries.

Earth vs. the Spider (2001)

IMDB: Earth vs. the Spider (2001)

Plot Summary: A shy, obsessive comic book fan gets injected with an experimental serum of a lab that is studying how to give humans the abilities of spiders.
=======================================

Just to think, I could have been stabbing myself in the face with a fork for 90 minutes and felt oh so much better.

The Station Agent (2003)

IMDB: The Station Agent (2003)

Plot Outline: When his only friend dies, a man born with dwarfism moves to rural New Jersey to live a life of solitude, only to meet a chatty hot dog vendor and a woman dealing with her own personal loss.
================================

A low key, sweet, vignette of life with exceptional characters and storyline. Peter Dinklage is truly remarkable.

Solaris (2002)

IMDB: Solaris (2002)

Plot Outline: A troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station orbiting a bizarre planet.
=================

This slow paced psychological tale, and primarily love story, set on a space station, is a valiant successor to the original Stanislaw Lem novel's 1972 film interpretation Solyris (1972).

As with the former, audience patience is a must, but well worth it.

Collateral (2004)

IMDB: Collateral (2004)

Plot Outline: A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in LA. He must find a way to save both himself and one last victim.
========================

Jaime Fox and Tom Cruise dance an admirable interplay of the regular guy caught in the wrong place at the wrong time by the *really* wrong guy.

Max (Fox)is just working as a Cab Driver temporarily until his real plan gets settled, even though he's been at it for 12 years.

Vincent (Cruise), a professional killer, enters Max's world and everything takes on a different perspective.

Fine work from both Cruise and Fox (nice to see Cruise in all his grey and getting older glory) and a fine action packed drama.

Paparazzi (2004)

IMDB: Paparazzi (2004)

Plot Outline: A rising Hollywood actor decides to take personal revenge against a group of four persistent photographers to make them pay for almost causing a personal tragedy involving his wife and son.
================================================================

What looked to be a fun revenge romp was so putrid as to provide fertilizer for putrid movies.

A newcomer to stardom, Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser), becomes the target of the modern day ruthless paparazzi, headed by a sleeze ball Rex Harper (Tom Sizemore).

His character is so way over the top as a scumbag, that it's difficult to believe in him at all.

When the young star sees his family nearly killed by the rampant paparazzi, he decides on some payback.

Worth a dollar-movie visit (once).
