Saboteur (1942)

IMDB: Saboteur (1942)

Plot Outline:
Aircraft factory worker Barry Kane goes on the run across the United States when he is wrongly accused of starting a fire that killed his best friend.

This early Hitchcock didn't quite produce the suspense intended, at least for me, although seeing Bob Cummings in a dramatic role was notable.

Freedomland (2006)

IMDB: Freedomland (2006)

Plot Outline: A black police detective must solve a strange case of a kidnapped boy and deal with a big racial protest.

This film was, in a word, messy. Moore never gives any coherent semblence of a character, rather rocking back and forth from basic nut case to almost a loving mom.

The movie doesn't know whether it wants to be a suspense thriller about a woman whose son is carjacked, or a civil rights movie about the plight of those in 'blighted' neighborhoods.

It fails miserably at both.

Ellen Page is absolutely fantastic in this role. At just under 20 yrs. old, she portrays a 14 yr. old with solid reality. Great movie all around.

White Noise (2005)

Plot Outline: An architect's desire to speak with his wife from beyond the grave, becomes an obsession with supernatural repercussions.

I really liked this movie. It was not well received well in the theaters or by the critics, but I found it to have a near-hit potential.

While it started out as a seance with new-technology movie, the last 30 minutes lent a component that if it had been allowed to be nutured, IMHO, would have resulted in a kick-ass horror film.

I'm interested in seeing White Noise 2 -- it could be awful, or if played right, really creepy.

This is not the Daniel Craig (Munich, Casino Royale) you're used to. This is not the Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) you're used to either.

It could have been so much more.... a shame really.

Plot Outline: Robert and Alfred are rival magicians. When Alfred performs the ultimate magic trick, Robert tries desperately to find out the secret to the trick.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976)

IMDB: The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976)

Jodie Foster makes her first thriller/suspense/horror outing at 13 in this story of a girl who lives with her father in a leased farmhouse, although nobody ever actually *sees* her father.

And don't be looking in the basement....

Martin Sheen as the pedophile is probably type casting, but that's another story.

IMDB: Deathtrap (1982)

Sidney Lumet's play within a play, although far from the best of Lumet's work, shows an always engaging Michael Cain, and some raw talent of the young Christopher Reeve, perhaps trying to show he was more than a pretty typecast superhero.

The Eye (2002)

The Eye (2002)

Ok, what was so good about Jian gui (The Eye)? Let me see... how bout

Synopsis: A woman, blind since the age of 2, receives corneal transplants and starts seeing ghosts. Turns out the donor also had this ability, but didn't exactly have the greatest life because of it.

This is one of those pictures that is creepy and heart warming at the same time. It would be unfair to compare it to The Sixth Sense, even though there's the seeing dead people theme.

Unlike, TSS however, there is no big twist at the end of The Eye, and while Wang Kar Mun (Angelica Lee) is terrified by her new encounters, she, with the help and advise of her psychotherapist Dr. Wah (Lawrence Chou), wants to find out who the donor of her corneas was, and how she can do something to stop the torture she's enduring.

I'm now anxious to check out other work by the Pang Brothers.

Pretty cool Slash 'em whack-a-doodle with a twist.

The cast looks to be identical.

Session 9 (2001)

IMDB: Session 9 (2001)

Brad Anderson -- remember the name of the director of Session 9, so you can make it a point to avoid anything even remotely connected to that name, or that film.

Next to Session 9, Papparazzi is Citizen Kane! 90 minutes of pure torture! If you're a Catholic, and believe in Purgatory, you don't have to wait for judgement day -- just pop Session 9 in the DVD player and watch the soul drain out of you.

One would get more entertainment from outtakes of Chucky 3.

What was intended as a creepy thriller is nothing more than a jumbled cacaphony of 'Hasmat team meets its own multiple personality.'

God, it is a good thing that David Caruso has CSI: Miami to depend on for his income, cause this puppy would have ensured an end to his career.

Saw (2004)

IMDB: Saw (2004)

Plot Outline: With a dead body laying between them, two men (Whannell and Elwes) wake up in the secure lair of a serial killer who's been nicknamed "Jigsaw" by the police because of his unusual calling card.

In the vein of psycho/serial-killer/twist films, this one does a decent job. While slow at times, the end twist surprised me if not for just a moment, and evoked an all-around dark thriller.
