Masters of Horror: Imprint (2006)

IMDB: Masters of Horror: Imprint (2006)

Set in the mid 1800s, Christopher (Billy Drago) is a young American journalist who ventures to Japan to search for the Japanese prostitute he loved and abandoned years earlier. But when he ventures to an island off the coast, he sees that human demons and whores rule the land where a deformed courtesan awaits his arrival leading to a tale of extreme cruelty and perverse vengeance.

===============================================

Billy Drago does a decent job in this otherwise way over-the-top (even for Miike) horror film. I would posit that the reason that Showtime decided not to show this episode in the Masters of Horror series was the 'jungle abortionist' theme - throwing embryos in the river - rather than any reasons based on extreme gore or violence.

A much more polished sequal to the, at times, somewhat jarring House of 1000 Corpses, Rob Zombie's latest feature brings back the funhouse of gore and violence (mostly the latter this time around) and of course, those darkly disturbed monsters Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding.

Again, this is a very extreme film, most definitely not for the squeamish, but a rock solid entertainment for certain.

From IMDB, "In the middle of World War I, nine British soldiers caught behind enemy lines seek refuge in a complex network of German trenches. What they soon discover is that they aren't alone...and it isn't a German soldier that's hunting them down."

While on the one hand a horror film, Deathwatch is more a presentation of the the overwhelming stresses placed upon the soldiers, and how fragile their good judgement becomes.

In fact, you could probably take the supernatural aspect totally out of the picture, and it would make a pretty good tale of tragedy and suffering.

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

This Quentin Tarantino screenplay, directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Tarantino, Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, and Juliette Lewis is one slam bang vampire killing joyride.

Two low-class criminals kidnap a preacher and his two step children for the use of their RV to reach the promised payoff location. Only problem is that the meeting place - a Mexican bar and strip club -- happens to be the favorite hidey hole of more vampires than you can shake a stick at (no pun intended).

Such challenges create interesting alliances, and much violence.

Peter Jackson's Braindead a.k.a. Dead-Alive is the funniest, most over-the-top comedy horror show I've ever seen!

I thought Jackson's Bad Taste (1987) was pretty funny for an early work of campy gore, but Braindead is hysterical.

It is noted on IMDB as the goriest, bloodiest work to date, as in more fake blood was used than in any film before it.

Visitor Q (2001)

IMDB: Visitor Q

While it is almost an axiom that Takashi Miike's films are all Dark, Disturbing, and Difficult, there is also quite a bit of dark comedy in his work, and Visitor Q is probably the darkest.

If you can imagine a failed newsman, whose sense of self-worth is so low that he has sex with his prostitute daughter. His son is bullied by his schoolmates and so in turn beats his own mother, leaving large welts all over her body. She finds relief by shooting heroin and pimping herself out to local businessmen.

The newsman sees his son being bullied and decides this is a great story that will get him back in the graces of his former colleagues.

By the end of the film, we have a potpourri of incest, drug use, parental abuse, violence, with a smattering of necrophilia.

Needless to say, this is one whacked movie, but I have to admit, I found it to be not totally without redemption.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

IMDB: House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Wow, that was a really fun ride! This naturally belongs in my Dark, Disturbing, and Difficult box, but I found myself paying more attention to Rob Zombie's freshman film work than allowing it to affect me viscerally.

I admit I had no experience with Zombie's music prior to watching 1000 Corpses, but he most definitely has a knack for doing an interesting and not expected sound mix on top of some rather graphic imagery -- somewhat resemblant of Tarantino's musical sensibilities.

Captain Spaulding, the 'clown', portrayed by Sid Haig, was a riot. Having him welcome the viewer in the DVD Root Menu in his rather colorful fashion set the tone for the rest of the picture.

Some pretty creepy sets and costumes, and the shock/flash images purportedly taken by Zombie in his house with a handheld 16mm after the film was shot, keep the uneasy feeling nourished.

If you're the squeamish type, this is *not* the movie for you. If however, you are a fan of Horror, and especially if you intend to see the upcoming Zombie sequel "The Devil's Rejects", go now to the store and rent this one!

Zombie (1979)

Sometimes billed as Zombi 2, this excellent example of the Italian horror genre was intended to be the 'sequel' to the 1978 George Romero's Dawn of the Dead
although it really has nothing to do with Romero's film. Director Lucio Fulci manages to stay this side of camp for the most part.

Modest production values aside, some of the scenes in Zombie are truly scary and for all but the most hardened of us, shocking. If you don't care for jagged splinters of wood meeting up with human eyeballs, you might want to stay away from this one though.
