The Fighting 69th (1940)

IMDB: The Fighting 69th (1940)

Plot Outline:
"The Fighting 69th" is a First World War regiment of mostly New York-Irish soldiers. Amongst a cocky crew, perhaps the cockiest is Jerry Plunkett, a scrappy fellow who looks out only for himself. The officers and non-coms of the regiment do their best to instill discipline in Plunkett, and the chaplain, Father Duffy, tries to make Plunkett see the greater good, all to no avail.

Hey, Cagney is worth watching in most anything, although this color by numbers war story is pretty much a simple tribute story to Father Duffy.

The Beast of War (1988) aka The Beast

The Beast of War (1988) aka The Beast

Damn, this was one good war picture. I started out thinking this is a direct to video average film with a SAG scale rate cast, but after 45 minutes I really began to be enthralled by this tale of a fragmented Russian tank crew's experiences during the Afghanistan conflict.

This is much more a character study of the crew dynamics than just another action-in-the-desert storyline.

And hey, it's about a Tank, one of the coolest, the Soviet T-62 (although more than likely T-72s were used in Afghanistan)

Don't get me wrong, this is not an earth shattering dramatic piece, but the whole is much more than the sum of the parts.

The Bedford Incident (1965)

The Bedford Incident (1965)

I never tire of watching this movie. The fantastic cast and depth of characters easily maintains the tension of this Cold War classic.

To say that submarine chaser Capt. Eric Finlander (Richard Widmark) maintains a taut ship is an understatement. In fact, it takes little time for the audience to realize that it is inevitible that something, or someone, will snap.

Discovering a Russian sub inside the territorial waters of Greenland leads to an oceanic cat and mouse game, but the real match of wits and fears is onboard the sub chaser.

Sidney Poitier's reporter Ben Munceford is probably the weakest performance -- he barely manages to compete with the inexorably determined Finlander.

Martin Balsam shines as the ineffable ship's doctor, and of course James McCarther (Hawaii Five O) is memorable for his small role as the somewhat too anxious to please Ensign Ralston.
